Daniel Ricciardo has been issued a three-place grid penalty for the Spanish Grand Prix after reversing into Daniil Kvyat in Baku.

Ricciardo was attacking his former Red Bull teammate into Turn 3, but ran too deep and took to the run-off area.

As he was on the outside, Kvyat couldn't turn in, and therefore had to brake in order to avoid hitting the barrier on the outside of the corner.

However, Ricciardo then reversed backwards into the left rear of Kvyat and both drivers soon retired from the race due to the damage incurred.

The stewards called both drivers to a hearing at 18:30 local time, where it was concluded that “the driver of car 3 reversed into car 26 thereby causing a collision.”

Ricciardo was also given two penalty points on his license, but is in no danger of receiving a race ban, as it is the first two he's been handed over the last 12 months.

Considering how Renault seem to still struggle significantly with the electrical bits, that'd just be another way they could somehow manage to fail.

  • I mean, it was earned. It was a pretty clumsy maneuver to begin with, then reversing right into Kvyat was the cherry on the crapana split.

If F1 is supposed to be road relevant the cars should have reversing cameras or at least audable parking sensors.
