In 1992 it was uncertain whether Ayrton would continue in Formula 1. After the 1992 season, which was the last season with partner Honda, the Brazilian had no prospects for a competitive car for 1993. McLaren tried in vain to loosen the powerful Renault-V10 engines of Ligier, but this plan did not succeed.
McLaren got the Ford customer engine in 1993. Ayrton was initially not interested in a new partnership with McLaren, he wanted to take a one-year break, just like Alain Prost in 1992. However, in 1993 he finally got the opportunity to test the McLaren-Ford at Silverstone. Senna, who was actually coming from his holiday address, was positively surprised by the potential of the MP4-8.
The Brazilian decided to work for McLaren on one race-to-race contract basis. The rumours were that he got one million dollars per race. In 1993, he ran 16 races and won five. It was perhaps Ayrton's best season as a driver, as the Williams Renault was dominant at the time. His last victory came in Australia where he made friends with Alain Prost on the podium.
