Antonio Giovinazzi has been handed a 5-place grid penalty after Alfa Romeo changed his gearbox ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix.

Giovinazzi missed out on advancing to Q2, as he was only quicker than the Williams duo on Saturday, dropping out of the opening stage of qualifying.

Despite the fact that he has been handed a 5-place grid drop, he will still start from 18th due to Nico Hulkenberg's pit lane start and a previously confirmed penalty for George Russell.

Robert Kubica has subsequently been promoted to P17 for Williams.

"I have been struggling with my brakes all weekend and it was no different in today’s qualifying. It’s quite disappointing to go out in Q1, I did a mistake in Turn 10, locked up the fronts and that probably cost me a place in Q2," Giovinazzi said.

"Tomorrow’s race will be challenging because overtaking here is not easy. We will continue working on making improvements and see what we can do in the race."
