Sao Paulo push through vote seeking to keep Brazil GP at Interlagos

The Sao Paulo council has shown its support in keeping the Brazilian Grand Prix at its current venue at Interlagos.

In recent weeks, Brazil's president Jair Bolsonaro declared that the 2020 Brazilian Grand Prix will be transferred to a track in Rio de Janeiro that is yet to be built.

The announcement raised eyebrows due to the lateness of the announcement of a race to be held at a non-existent circuit.

F1's commercial managing director Sean Bratches confirmed recently that Interlagos has a contract in place for 2020, but is nonetheless flattered by Rio's interest.

“We’ve got a contract with our incumbent promoter through the 2020 Grand Prix,” the American said.

“Brazil generally and Rio specifically are very attractive to us from a race standpoint and we’re flattered by the interest.”

Sao Paulo has hosted Brazil's round of the world championship every year since 1990, but uncertainty hangs over its future amid contract negotiations.

This week, the Sao Paulo city council opted not to support the possibility of the circuit being privately sold, which would put the future of the event in major doubt.

The city's mayor Bruno Covas still has to approve the motion but should it be accepted, it will offer Sao Paulo a big boost in keeping the race for more years to come.

Sao Paulo is now looking to meet president Bolsonaro and the country's minister of tourism Marcelo Alvaro.
