Norris expecting small margins between Q1 exit and Q3 safety

Lando Norris believes that there will not be much in between failing to progress past Q1 and qualifying for Q3 on Saturday afternoon in Monaco.

Norris ended the second practice session on Thursday in P12, but just four tenths ahead of him was the Red Bull of Perre Gasly in P4.

Norris is having his first experience this year at Monaco in a Formula 1 car, having raced there 12 months ago in Formula 2, picking up a podium in the sprint race.

The 19-year-old admitted that he struggled during the opening practice session, but believed McLaren made some strong improvements before the afternoon outing.

"It's fast and it's tough. It's tricky, it's just a very tricky track," the McLaren driver said. "It takes time to build up to it with every lap that I do. You're making corrections here and there, getting better and better.

"It's not been a bad first day, but it's not been perfect. In FP1, we struggled quite a bit but we made some good improvements for FP2.

"I made a mistake which made me lose quite a bit of running which I'm frustrated about. Apart from than that, we made a step forward, we just need to make sure we make another one for tomorrow."

With Monaco being such a short circuit, the gaps are usually tight between the drivers, and Norris is not expecting any exception this year when qualifying kicks off.

"Just over four-tenths could've put you P4," the McLaren driver said." You have Mercedes at the top by quite a long way, then Red Bull and Ferrari

"It's so close, if someone nails a lap, it could be Q3 or Q1 so it's going to be very tough on Saturday. If we can make some improvements like we did from FP1 to FP2 then we can be more hopeful about getting into Q3."
