Simon Pagenaud will race with the number 1 on his car next year.
The Frenchman won the IndyCar title last weekend with a dominant win in the season finale at the GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma.
While the champion has the choice of whether or not to run the number on their car, outgoing champion Scott Dixon opted to keep with his familiar number 9 when he defended his 2013 and 2015 titles, while Ryan Hunter-Reay and Pagenaud's Penske team mate Will Power both made the switch to number 1.
Replying to a fan's question on Twitter, Team Penske president Tim Cindric revealed Pagenaud's choice.
"Simon Pagenaud will be sporting the #1 in 2017," he wrote. "Hopefully, we can keep it in the Team Penske family for a while," he commented
