Josef Newgarden is understood to be in line to replace Juan Pablo Montoya at Team Penske next year.
That is the claim of RACER.com which reports that a team insider has conformed the news to them.
"It's Newgarden, not Rossi," said the anonymous whistle-blower, referring to speculation former Manor F1 driver Alexander Rossi was in talks with the team. "I can't say for sure he's signed yet, but I know he's the guy."
Newgarden has been linked with a move to IndyCar powerhouses Penske and Chip Ganassi racing for the last two seasons, although the Tennessee native opted to stay with Ed Carpenter Racing, the team that gave him each of his three IndyCar wins (two in 2015 as CFH Racing).
Ed Carpenter Racing have reportedly entered discussions with Montoya over a deal to go in the other direction to replace Carpenter.
